Ebooks, Dev work
I was an ebook developer for a number of indie authors and publishing houses, both big and small. As a developer, I converted ebooks from .doc, .docx, .pdf, and .indd files into .epub and .mobi.
This included over 120 reflowable, fixed format, vanilla, complex, and enhanced ebooks.
- Reflowable means text can reflow from one page to another on a screen. Most ebooks, including novels and non-fiction books, are reflowable.
- Fixed format means text and images are told to stay in a certain spot on the screen. Most of my fixed format ebooks were children’s picture books or graphic novels.
- Vanilla ebooks refers to plain ebooks, meaning mostly text/narrative.
- Complex ebooks refer to books such as cookbooks, which required a lot of special formatting, headings, fonts, etc.
- Enhanced ebooks contained audio, video, and/or some interactivity.
Ebooks were tailored to the customer’s needs, and I validated and tested for quality. All my ebooks were written with clean code, and designed and reviewed for maximum readability. My focus was to make an ebook simple, yet beautiful, and easy to read on different devices and screen sizes.
Additional responsibilities included:
- Uploading ebooks to distributors, such as Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, Google, Kobo, and Smashwords
- Adding and updating all book metadata
- Creating custom sample files
- Training in-house app teams

Howard Bott, Saleh’s Children
Sabrina’s help in getting my husband’s book formatted for eBook release, making sure the book was properly formatted across multiple tablets and following up to be sure the uploads had taken place was invaluable. The entire process took way less time than I had anticipated. On top of that Sabrina was available and willing to answer my many questions about epublishing. Thank you, Sabrina.
Yon Walls, Seeing Colette
Working with Sabrina to get my book formatted for an e-reading audience, was above and beyond my expectations. She was referred to me by a trusted experienced editor.Sabrina not only knows about best practices as an e-book developer, but is personable, careful and is able to offer needed online publishing insights in light of the ever-changing tech landscape.
The final product is excellent! It was completed in a short time-frame and she was available to respond to any questions that I had along the way. I look forward to future work with Sabrina.
Joanne Shwed, Backspace Ink, Editing & Publishing Services
The missing link in my array of self-publishing services was ebook conversion. Since I found Sabrina Ricci, I can send my clients to her with confidence. She is friendly, knowledgeable, generous, positive, and very talented. Thanks for being an integral part of my team, Sabrina!
Mary Stolfa, From COCKTAIL to CHEMO
I cannot say enough good things about Sabrina. She converted my manuscript to an E-book in different formats and for use on many devices. Sabrina was extremely knowledgeable, thorough and in my opinion, an expert at what she does. I also had several questions after she had already completed her work, but she was quick to help and answer my questions on her own time. Sabrina was also an absolute pleasure to work with and I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for an E-book Developer!
Beverly Williams, Get the Job Done ?
As I addressed the challenges of self publishing, someone whose work I highly regarded recommended Sabrina to me. I was not disappointed. Sabrina did what she said she would do when she said she would do it. She also produced a quality work product. The highest praise I can give Sabrina is that I’ll engage her again.
Ali Binazir, Tao of Dating
I enlisted Sabrina to help me create an EPUB file of my book, which Apple was rejecting because of errors. Not only did she turn around the work in record time (about an hour), but she reduced the amount of her bid because it took her less time than estimated. The package validated on the iTunes store (= went through), and all is well with the world. Thanks for the conscientiousness and efficiency, Sabrina!
